LFM 2014 BigLaw Report: BigLaw Firms Have 68 Apps, Up 62% From Last Year

The Law Firm Mobile (LFM) blog is pleased to release its third annual research report on AmLaw 200 and Global 100 law firm production of mobile apps. Last year’s report can be found here.

  • Of the 2013 AmLaw 200, 36 firms (18%) produced a total of 53 mobile apps. This amounts to an increase of 63% in firms having apps than last year [22 firms]. As a point of reference,  85 AmLaw 200 firms (43%) have mobile compatible web sites.
  • Of the 2013 Global 100, 28 firms (28%) produced a total of 50 mobile apps. This amounts to an increase of 22% in firms having apps than last year [23 firms].  As a point of reference,  39 Global 100 firms (39%) have mobile compatible web sites.
  • AmLaw 200 and Global 100 firms have collectively produced a total of 68 apps. This is an increase of 62% from last year. [Last year, there was a total 42 apps.]

Firms with More Than One App

  • Of all BigLaw firms, 8 have produced more than one smart phone app: Baker McKenzie, DLA Piper, Latham & Watkins, Littler Mendelson, Morrison & Foerster, Paul Hastings, Eversheds, and Allen & Overy. This is up from 1 last year. Latham & Watkins has produced the most apps: 9.

App Platforms

  • Of the 68 apps produced by Biglaw firms, 96% are offered on the iPhone, 6% are offered on the BlackBerry, and 29% are offered on Android (35%). Last year, only 17% of apps were on the Android platform.

Type of Apps

  • Of the 68 apps produced by Biglaw firms, 3 (4%) were focused on recruitment, 8 (12%) were produced for events (internal or external), 15 (22%) presented general firm information (similar to a website), and 42 (62%) provided legal resources of various types.

Initial Impressions

This past year, BigLaw firms have made a steady gains in the production of mobile apps for smart phones and, to a very small extent, tablets. Law firms are steadily being willing to experiment and invest in mobile. Mobile websites continue to be implemented at a much higher rate than mobile apps, mainly due to fact that mobile compatible websites present an easier to understand value proposition to law firms than apps.

This year’s jump in the number of firms with apps and the total absolute number of apps by BigLaw firms may be an indication that BigLaw firms are starting to truly appreciate the potential of connecting with clients, potential clients, and others via smartphone apps. Over time, one metric to watch is the number of firms with multiple mobile apps — as an indicator of the extent to which firms have fully bought into the potential benefits of mobile. The number of firms with this distinction is 9 at this point. Clearly, we are at a very early point in the law firm mobile life cycle.

We look forward to seeing how firms continue to improve their outreach to clients via mobile technologies.
