Fox Rothschild LLP has created a resource app called Data Breach 411, to help companies better understand various privacy related rules and regulations.

The app incorporates the following types of content:

  • State Security Breach Statutes: A listing of 46 states that have data breach laws, text as to what constitutes personal information, and links to each state’s notification statutes.
  • HIPAA/HITECH Statutes: Breach notifications rules and other information related to the loss or theft of personal health information.
  • Additional Resources: Information on COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act), various links to credit agencies and credit monitoring services and the firm’s own blogs.

On creating the app, Scott L. Vernick, head of the firm’s Privacy and Data Security Practice, remarked:

Data breaches can severely impact a company’s reputation and have debilitating consequences to businesses big and small. Our app is a ‘one stop shop’ for in-house counsel and privacy officers to instantly access the relevant state-specific details on what they need to do, who they need to notify, when and how.

As readers of Law Firm Mobile know, we appreciate when law firms create substantive resources for clients and others. Putting aside whether the content in this app is sufficiently comprehensive, users have high expectations as to the quality of how information is accessed and presented in mobile apps. Fox Rothschild should step up to refine its app to address design issues, such as: generic buttons that do not look like they belong with the app, text that is not sufficiently formatted for the app (it has a cut-and-pasted look), lack of an A-to-Z jump listing on the right-hand side in the States list, and icons that are too small at the bottom of the screen. Also, an app really should not be a jumping off point to other mobile (or not) websites; but, in this app, the statute links kick the user to third-party websites and other reference links  bring the user to content that clearly is not stored or integrated into the app.

So, Fox Rothschild, look at your app as being version 1.0. Now put some resources into giving us the 2.0 or 3.0 version that will really impress!
